A horrifying tanker explosion in Niger State on Saturday has left over 70 people dead and at least 57 injured, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed.
The incident occurred in the early hours along the Dikko-Maje Road, opposite Baddegi Station. According to NEMA, the explosion happened after a petrol tanker (PMS) crashed, and an attempt was made to transfer its highly flammable contents to another tanker.
Tragically, the spilled petrol came into contact with a generator used to power the transfer, triggering a massive inferno. The fire claimed lives, destroyed shops, and left several victims burnt beyond recognition. Most of the casualties were members of the local community and passers-by.
NEMA, under the directive of its Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, deployed an emergency rescue team to the site. Speaking on the incident, Mrs. Umar expressed deep sympathy for the victims and their families while condemning the unsafe handling of petrol transfers, which has led to recurring tragedies.
“Despite our extensive public awareness campaigns, many people continue to ignore the dangers of such risky behavior. This incident is a grim reminder of the need for strict adherence to safety measures during emergencies,” she stated.
Under Mrs. Umar’s leadership, NEMA’s emergency team, led by Mr. Hussaini Isah, Head of the Minna Operation Office, has been working alongside first responders to evacuate victims, provide medical assistance, and manage the aftermath of the explosion.
The injured have been transported to nearby hospitals for urgent care, while the agency is continuing its rescue operations and providing support to the affected community.
This devastating incident highlights the ongoing risks associated with improper handling of flammable materials and underscores the importance of public safety measures to prevent similar occurrences.
The tragedy serves as a stark warning of the consequences of neglecting safety protocols, with calls for heightened vigilance and adherence to preventive measures in handling hazardous materials.
