2027 Presidency: PDP Courts Jonathan Amid Uncertainty Over Peter Obi's Return
As political calculations for the 2027 presidential election intensify, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is reportedly stepping up efforts to woo former President Goodluck Jonathan back into its fold, with eyes on presenting him as the party’s presidential flagbearer.
A Board of Trustees (BoT) member of the PDP, speaking to a credible publication, disclosed that despite assurances from Peter Obi—the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate—of serving only one term if elected, many within the PDP leadership feel Jonathan remains a more dependable option.
“Let me tell you straight away, serious efforts are being made to pull Jonathan into the race,” the BoT member stated.
“From the look of things, our northern colleagues believe it is necessary to get the former president to come in and complete his second term.”
According to him, while the Obi option hasn’t been completely ruled out, developments within the Labour Party and its fragile coalition make it too risky for the PDP to hinge its hopes solely on his return.
“We do not want a situation that could leave the party scrambling to find a strong contender. The Labour Party is currently in flux, and there's a risk of last-minute upsets,” he added.
Insider sources revealed that discussions around Jonathan’s possible return were tabled during a high-level PDP engagement in The Gambia. The meeting reportedly included talks on broader strategic planning—particularly party funding and reviving internal structures ahead of the 2027 elections.
