2027: Politicians Plotting Jonathan’s Return to Power – Bashir Ahmad Raises Concern

Bashir Ahmad, former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has sounded the alarm over what he describes as quiet but strategic efforts by some political actors to coax former President Goodluck Jonathan into the 2027 presidential race.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Ahmad claimed that certain influential political figures are eyeing Jonathan’s potential candidacy as a strategic advantage—particularly in Northern Nigeria—under the calculated promise of a single-term presidency. According to him, these moves are being driven more by political expediency and zoning arrangements than by any real expectations of meaningful leadership or policy contributions from the former president.

“From all indications, there are ongoing subtle moves by certain political elements trying to convince former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest again in 2027,” Ahmad wrote. “They calculate that his candidacy will be easy to market in the North under the guise that he would only serve a single term.”

However, Ahmad criticized the logic behind this push, arguing that it does a disservice to the North and to the democratic process by reducing an entire region to a pawn in the power rotation game.

“But the troubling part is that this push is not rooted in what he would offer the North or the country at large, but merely in political convenience and power rotation. The North deserves more than being used as a political ladder,” he stated pointedly.

Ahmad’s remarks have since stirred debate online, with many questioning the motives of the alleged political schemers and the implications of Jonathan’s potential return to the presidency. As the political temperature begins to rise ahead of the 2027 general elections, this development adds a new layer to the unfolding drama within Nigeria’s political landscape.
