"Defying the 'Japa Syndrome': Meet Dr. Adedoyin Adeleke, the PhD Holder Who Returned to Nigeria to Drive Green Growth"
In a bold move that defies the current trend of skilled Nigerians leaving the country in search of greener pastures, Dr. Adedoyin Adeleke, a 35-year-old PhD holder, has returned to Nigeria with a mission to drive green growth and development across Africa.
Adeleke, who hails from Osun State, had been working in Italy before his return, but he was determined to come back home and contribute to the development of his country. Despite advice from family and friends to remain in Europe, Adeleke was resolute in his decision, driven by a strong belief in the potential of Nigeria and the broader African continent.
"I returned to Nigeria without their knowledge in November 2023," Adeleke revealed. "I often say 'Africa is too rich to be poor, I choose to act'."
Adeleke's commitment to green growth is exemplified by his non-profit organization, Green Growth Africa Sustainability Network (Green Growth Africa), which he founded in 2017. The organization supports research students in African universities and has developed several initiatives, including the EcoHeroes Initiative, Africa4Nature Health Initiative, and EcoKnowledge Derivatives.
Adeleke's organization has also completed a green building, an ultramodern structure made entirely from waste plastic bottles and fully powered by solar energy. "At Green Growth Africa, our effort is to contribute to sector decarbonisation," Adeleke said.
Through his work, Adeleke aims to turn Nigeria into a greener pasture, attracting talent and investment from around the world. "If Europe, where I was, is certainly a 'greener pasture', but some people made Europe 'green' enough to attract our interest. But can't we increase the fortune of Nigeria, to be 'green' enough for other nationals to compete to visit and relocate to Nigeria?" he asked.
Adeleke's story is an inspiration to many, and his commitment to driving green growth in Nigeria is a testament to the power of determination and faith. As he said, "God is my greatest decision-maker; I certainly would not have returned to Nigeria without a leading from Him."
