WAEC Denies Cancelling 2025 WASSCE, Labels Viral Report “Fake News”
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially dismissed rumors that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) has been cancelled in Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Moyosola Adesina, the Council’s Acting Head of Public Affairs, described the viral reports as false, misleading, and the work of mischief-makers.

The denial comes after a fake press release made the rounds on social media on Saturday, July 19, 2025, alleging that WAEC had scrapped the 2025 exams due to “widespread malpractice, coordinated question leaks, and unauthorized digital sharing of exam materials.”

WAEC strongly refuted the claims, urging the public, especially candidates and parents, to disregard the false alarm.

“The said examination has not been cancelled,” the Council stated, adding that, “though the origin of the fake report remains unclear, it is clear that the intention is to cause confusion and panic.”

WAEC confirmed that the marking of exam scripts has just concluded, and assured candidates that results will be released on or before Thursday, August 4, 2025.

The Council also reminded the public that any genuine information from WAEC is released only through its verified social media handles, accredited national news platforms, and its Public Affairs Department.

“We urge candidates to remain calm and ignore unverified sources,” the Council added.
