In a stirring call for unity and security, President Bola Tinubu has pledged to stabilize the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and contribute to peace and prosperity across Africa. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the African Military Games 2024 in Abuja, Tinubu outlined his administration's commitment to addressing regional insecurity and fostering stronger ties among African nations.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu emphasized that his tenure as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government would focus on promoting camaraderie among African troops as a foundation for a more secure and prosperous continent.
A New Vision for Security in Africa
“As ECOWAS Chairman, I am determined to stabilize the sub-region and the entire African continent to ensure its prosperity,” Tinubu declared. “Strengthening ties across African countries to foster a deep sense of camaraderie among our troops is a priority.”
The President reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to eliminate security threats and violent crimes in Nigeria, emphasizing that regional stability is essential for broader peace efforts across Africa.
Reviving the Spirit of Military Unity Through Sports
The Africa Military Games 2024, held two decades after its inaugural edition, was heralded as a timely initiative to rekindle solidarity among African militaries. Tinubu praised the event for promoting camaraderie, physical fitness, and emotional well-being among armed forces personnel.
“Our Armed Forces must remain physically, mentally, and emotionally prepared to adapt to the complexities of an ever-changing and volatile environment,” Tinubu said, highlighting the critical role of fitness and sports in ensuring optimal performance.
Celebrating Excellence and Sportsmanship
Declaring the Games officially closed, Tinubu commended the professionalism and sportsmanship displayed by participants from across the continent. “You have shown that you are not only military personnel but also exceptional sportsmen and women. This achievement is one we can all, as Africans, be proud of,” he stated.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, echoed these sentiments, lauding the Games as a unifying event for African nations. “Awards and trophies are the pinnacle of achievement, but every participant is a winner for fostering unity and showcasing the spirit of Africa,” he said.
Security Wins Beyond the Sports Field
Even as the continent’s troops gathered in a spirit of sportsmanship, Nigeria’s Armed Forces achieved notable victories in the ongoing fight against insecurity. Troops successfully neutralized scores of terrorists in Zamfara State, a testament to the nation’s unwavering determination to address its security challenges.
A Bold Step Forward
With his vision of stabilizing ECOWAS and strengthening ties across Africa, Tinubu is positioning Nigeria as a central figure in the quest for a more secure and united continent. His administration’s commitment to fostering camaraderie, both on and off the battlefield, marks a bold step towards a more peaceful and prosperous Africa.
As the dust settles on the Africa Military Games, the message is clear: unity, preparedness, and resilience are key to overcoming Africa’s challenges and achieving lasting peace.
