Tinubu’s Bold Move: Meet Nigeria’s New Health Insurance Boss
By Achimi muktar
In a strategic shake-up of Nigeria’s healthcare sector, President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr. Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe as the new chairperson of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). The appointment, which will run for an initial term of four years, is seen as a significant step toward reforming the nation’s health insurance framework.
Dr. Oloriegbe, a former senator representing Kwara Central in the 9th National Assembly, brings a wealth of experience to the role. A seasoned medical professional and policy expert, he holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, as well as a Master’s in Coaching and Consultation from the prestigious University of Oxford, UK, and HEC Paris.
With a track record in health leadership, Oloriegbe previously chaired the Senate Committee on Health from 2019 to 2023 and played a key role in legislative reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system. His affiliations with major medical bodies, including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the International Aids Society (IAS), further underscore his commitment to healthcare advancement.
As he steps into this critical position, all eyes will be on how Dr. Oloriegbe navigates the challenges of expanding health insurance coverage, improving accessibility, and driving sustainable healthcare financing for millions of Nigerians. Will this appointment mark a turning point for Nigeria’s health insurance sector? Time will tell.
