Tinubu Races Against Time to Unveil Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Before May 25—Umahi Drops Big Reveal

In a bold stride toward infrastructure transformation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is gearing up to inaugurate a major section of the highly anticipated Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway before May 25, according to Minister of Works, Dave Umahi.

Speaking to State House correspondents after Monday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, Umahi disclosed that a 30-kilometre stretch of Section One, now over 70 percent completed, will be commissioned by the president. Additionally, another 10 kilometres of Section Two will also be opened to the public in the coming weeks.

“This is more than just a road project—it’s a symbol of national progress,” Umahi declared. “President Tinubu will personally commission these completed portions before May 25.”

But that’s not all. Umahi revealed that 10 kilometres of the Sokoto-Badagry Highway at the Kebbi axis, built entirely with concrete, will also be inaugurated before the end of May.

In a major international boost, Umahi said Deutsche Bank and the Development Bank of South Africa had thoroughly reviewed the coastal highway’s loan and bid documents. The findings? A glowing endorsement.

“They confirmed that the procurement process was not only transparent and efficient but also undervalued in terms of cost,” he said, adding that the banks had praised the project in discussions with Nigeria’s finance minister during meetings in the U.S.

The endorsement from these financial giants is expected to silence critics and further legitimize the Tinubu administration’s commitment to transformative infrastructure development.

According to Umahi, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is not just a national milestone, but an internationally recognised achievement.
