In a vibrant celebration of history, tradition, and unity, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to preserving Nigeria’s cultural diversity, describing it as a source of strength and pride for the nation.
The President’s message came during the official coronation of Oba Abimbola Owoade as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, a historic event held at Olivet Baptist High School, Oyo, that drew royal fanfare, cultural displays, and dignitaries from across Nigeria.
Represented by Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, Tinubu noted that supporting cultural heritage and traditional institutions is a key part of the government’s agenda to foster national identity, promote unity, and preserve the richness of Nigeria’s many ethnic traditions.
“Our cultural diversity is not a weakness—it is our greatest strength,” Tinubu stated. “We will continue to support initiatives that celebrate and protect our heritage.”
A Crown Steeped in Legacy
Speaking on the significance of the event, the President described the Alaafin stool as a symbol of Yoruba pride, resilience, and unity, rooted in the enduring legacy of one of Africa’s most formidable empires.
“The Oyo Empire was once the political and military nucleus of the Yoruba people. The Alaafin’s throne is more than a seat of power—it is a living institution that embodies Yoruba history, values, and aspirations,” Tinubu said.
He emphasized that the ascension of Oba Owoade comes at a time when Nigeria needs its traditional rulers to rise as unifying voices, cultural guardians, and advocates of progress.
“May your reign be marked by wisdom, peace, and unprecedented development for Oyo and Nigeria at large,” Tinubu prayed, urging the people of the ancient kingdom to support their new monarch wholeheartedly.
Makinde Rallies Support for Tradition and Tourism
Also speaking at the event, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State reiterated his administration’s unwavering support for traditional institutions, highlighting their crucial role in preserving culture and boosting tourism.
“The Alaafin of Oyo is not just a traditional title—it is a global cultural brand. We are committed to preserving and promoting it,” Makinde said.
He urged the people of Oyo to rally behind the new Alaafin and assured them that his government would continue to elevate traditional rulers and empower them as stakeholders in the state’s development.
The New Alaafin Speaks
In his first royal address, Oba Abimbola Owoade vowed to protect and promote the cultural heritage of the Oyo Kingdom, calling on the Oyomesi (the kingmakers), and sons and daughters of the land to join hands in building a stronger, united, and prosperous Oyo.
“Together, we shall uphold the legacy of our ancestors and write a new chapter of greatness,” the monarch said, drawing cheers from the crowd.
The climax of the ceremony was the presentation of the official instruments of office by Governor Makinde, formally confirming Oba Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo—ushering in a new era for one of Nigeria’s most storied monarchies.
As traditional drums echoed into the evening sky and cultural troupes danced in jubilation, one thing was clear: Nigeria’s royal heritage is not fading—it’s being reborn.
