Tinubu: “I Couldn’t Watch WAFCON Final—It Was a High Blood Pressure Risk!”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has opened up about the emotional rollercoaster he experienced during the dramatic final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), confessing that he initially avoided watching the match to protect his health.

Speaking at a special reception for the Super Falcons at the Presidential Villa on Monday evening, the President said he deliberately kept away from his television during the high-stakes clash in Rabat, Morocco.

“Honestly, I did not want to watch the match,” Tinubu admitted. “I didn’t want high blood pressure.”

But despite his effort to stay calm and uninvolved, fate—and a few persistent aides—had other plans.

“People came into my room and turned on my TV to that channel,” he recounted.

The tension only mounted as Nigeria fell behind with two early goals. The President described how the situation pushed him to the edge of his seat:

“When it was 2-0, I got very restless and very offended. But I was still there watching.”

Ultimately, Tinubu said he was left in awe of the team’s resilience and fighting spirit.

“I was impressed by the indomitable spirit of resilience, determination, and courage of the team.”

Indeed, Nigeria’s Super Falcons pulled off an unforgettable comeback, scoring three unanswered goals to defeat tournament hosts Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling finale that captivated millions across the continent.

The President’s candid comments struck a chord with many Nigerians, offering a relatable glimpse into the anxiety and national pride that come with supporting the country’s top athletes on the global stage.
