Tech Revolution Hits the North-West NIGCOMSAT Unveils Space-Tech Hackathon & VSAT Training for Youths
By Achimi Muktar
In a bold move to drive technological innovation and broadband expansion, the Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Limited has unveiled a Space-Tech Hackathon and VSAT Training for young innovators across seven North-West states.
The groundbreaking programme, set to take place from April 7 to 11 in Dutse, Jigawa, is designed to empower students, start-ups, and tech enthusiasts with cutting-edge skills in satellite technology.
According to Aisha Bantam, Head of Corporate Affairs at NIGCOMSAT, the initiative will bridge the digital divide by fostering grassroots innovation and equipping participants with hands-on experience in Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) technology—a critical tool for improving broadband access in remote areas.
“The initiative aims to engage and empower young Nigerians, particularly university students, innovators, and professionals from Kaduna, Kano, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, and Jigawa states,” Bantam stated.

Why This Matters: The Bigger Picture
This isn’t NIGCOMSAT’s first rodeo. Earlier this year, the agency successfully hosted a Space-Tech Hackathon in the North-East, in collaboration with the Adamawa State Government. Themed “Building Grassroots Innovation in Satellite Technology,” the event, held from February 24 to 28 in Yola, Adamawa, provided young minds with tools to solve real-world challenges through space-tech solutions.
Now, North-West Nigeria is the next frontier, and the stakes are even higher.
Programme Highlights: What’s in It for Participants?
According to NIGCOMSAT Managing Director, Mrs. Jane Egerton-Idehen, the five-day event will offer:
✅ Hackathon Challenge – Participants will identify challenges, build tech solutions, and receive expert mentorship.
✅ VSAT Training for 100 Youths – Hands-on training on installing and managing satellite internet systems.
✅ Certification & Career Boost – Participants will gain skills that can open doors to jobs and entrepreneurship in ICT.
✅ NIGCOMSAT Accelerator Programme – Winning teams from the hackathon will be enrolled in the 2025 Cohort to further develop and implement their solutions.
Egerton-Idehen emphasized that the initiative isn’t just about technology—it’s about creating job opportunities, solving community problems, and tackling youth unemployment across Nigeria.
“The aim of Space-Tech Hackathons and VSAT Training is to inspire innovation, solve community challenges, and reduce youth unemployment nationwide,” she stated.
With Jigawa State and NIGCOMSAT Ltd co-hosting the event, expectations are high for this initiative to ignite a new wave of tech-driven solutions in the North-West.
