In a surprising twist, Nigerian football star Asisat Oshoala has been left out of the Super Falcons' 25-woman squad under newly appointed interim head coach, Justine Madugu. The six-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year, who now plays for Bay FC, is one of several big names missing from the roster ahead of Nigeria's doubleheader against Algeria at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos on October 26 and 29.

This marks the first time in three years that the Super Falcons will play on home soil, their last appearance being the 2021 Aisha Buhari Invitational tournament. Madugu, who took over from former coach Randy Waldrum, has made sweeping changes to the squad, with notable absences including Oshoala, Houston Dash defender Michelle Alozie, and Ashleigh Plumptre.

The decision has sparked outrage among Nigerian football fans, especially given Oshoala’s decorated career and crucial role in the team. While many expected her inclusion, Waldrum, during his tenure, had previously cited concerns over her fitness. However, Madugu has yet to provide a clear explanation for her exclusion.

The squad, initially expected to feature primarily local-based players, saw the addition of a few experienced foreign stars, including team captain Rasheedat Ajibade. Despite the mix of youth and experience, Oshoala’s absence remains a key talking point as the Falcons prepare for their upcoming friendly fixtures.

As Madugu steps into his role, all eyes will be on how the Super Falcons perform without some of their biggest stars, including Oshoala, who remains a fan favorite and a force in Nigerian football.
