Saraki, Ned Nwoko Weigh In: Reactions Trail Delta State Governor's Defection to APC

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori's defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sparked reactions from prominent figures in the country's political landscape. The defection, announced on April 23, 2025, is expected to add approximately 1.4 million Delta votes to the ruling APC, enhancing President Bola Tinubu's re-election calculus.

Former Senate President Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has dismissed concerns over the defection, describing it as an opportunity for the PDP to rebuild and refocus. "Those who want to leave the PDP should leave now and let the rest of us who want to stay concentrate on rebuilding the party and refocusing it to play the role of a viable opposition that will provide a better alternative for the good people of Nigeria," Saraki said. He emphasized the importance of a strong opposition in Nigeria's democratic space, warning against the danger of one-party dominance.

Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North, also weighed in on the defection, urging Governor Oborevwori to "leave behind political habits that caused the decline of PDP". Nwoko encouraged Oborevwori to embrace the APC's progressive agenda and lead the charge for constitutional reform, particularly in the creation of new states, including Anioma and New Delta.

The APC has welcomed Oborevwori and other defectors, with Vice President Kashim Shettima scheduled to receive them at a rally in Asaba. Despite the defection, Saraki remains optimistic about PDP's chances, saying the party is better with fewer members who are loyal, sincere, determined, dedicated, and committed to its ideas, ideals, and progress.
