In a powerful endorsement of homegrown innovation, Vice President Kashim Shettima visited SecureID Limited’s ultra-modern manufacturing plant yesterday, celebrating the company’s two-decade journey of excellence in smart card production and digital solutions.
The visit marked a significant moment in Nigeria’s push for technological self-sufficiency, reinforcing the government’s commitment to fostering local businesses and industrialization.
From Local Pioneer to Global Leader
SecureID, a trailblazer in Nigeria’s manufacturing sector, has cemented its reputation as a leader in smart card technology. With an impressive capacity to produce over 200 million cards and personalize more than 160 million annually, the company serves clients across 21 African nations—proof that Nigerian innovation is making waves beyond its borders.
During his tour of the facility, Vice President Shettima witnessed firsthand the advanced production processes that have positioned SecureID as a key player in the continent’s digital transformation.
A Beacon of Economic Growth
Commending SecureID’s resilience and success, Shettima described the company as a model for Nigeria’s economic transformation.
“SecureID is proof that when there is a will, there is always a way,” he stated. “The government is committed to creating an enabling environment for businesses like this to thrive. Through strategic policies and interventions, we aim to support local innovation, boost foreign exchange earnings, and create employment opportunities.”
Highlighting President Tinubu’s economic agenda, Shettima reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to strengthening indigenous enterprises.
“The health and survival of our enterprises are the true catalysts of a vibrant economy. This administration will continue to foster an environment where innovation thrives, ensuring that every citizen has the opportunity to succeed,” he added.
Government to Prioritize Local Production
As Nigeria looks to reduce reliance on imports, Shettima emphasized the need to prioritize homegrown businesses, particularly in the production of essential government documents.
“Anything Nigeria, we have to patronize. Passports, voter cards—everything,” he asserted, signaling potential government-backed contracts for SecureID and other indigenous manufacturers.
A Vision for the Future
Expressing her gratitude for the Vice President’s visit, SecureID founder Mrs. Kofo Akinkugbe reiterated the company’s mission to expand its footprint and drive economic growth.
“We are proud of what we have achieved so far, but this is just the beginning,” she said. “With the support of the government, we are ready to scale our operations, increase our export potential, and contribute even more to Nigeria’s economic growth.”
Akinkugbe also underscored SecureID’s commitment to sustainability, revealing that the company recently launched Nigeria’s first eco-friendly SIM card.
“We are very focused on sustainability, reducing plastic use, and creating environmentally friendly solutions for our customers,” she added.
A New Era for Nigerian Innovation
The Vice President’s visit not only reaffirmed the government’s support for local enterprises but also showcased the role of public-private partnerships in driving economic progress. SecureID stands as a testament to Nigeria’s potential in the global digital and manufacturing space—one that is only just beginning to be fully realized.
As the nation pushes towards self-reliance and industrial innovation, companies like SecureID are proving that Nigeria has what it takes to compete on the world stage.
