PRESIDENT TINUBU, NIGERIA AND SHAPING THE BRICKS DIPLOMACY.
"Nigeria strongly believes in South-South cooperation. We can, therefore, not be passive participants in global decision-making on financial restructuring, debt forgiveness, climate change, environmental issues, and healthcare”. President Tinubu
"We must be the architects of a future that addresses the specific needs and concerns of youths, who represent 70 per cent of our population in Nigeria. Therefore, Nigeria remains guided by our long-term vision, 2050, and nationally determined contribution.”-President Tinubu
These two quotes and more from President Bola Tinubu at the recent BRICS Summit hosted by Brazil is most valid. Without equivocation,
President Tinubu launched out demanding for a new governance structure. a reevaluation of the current global governance structure , the financial and healthcare systems, urging greater equity and inclusion for low-income and emerging economies, particularly in Africa.
The Growing Relevance and Rise of BRICS signposts a new world moving in towards a multi polar financial order. A financial order that will enhance trade and commercial activities and re-orient the economies of member States and partners.
BRICS is not directly challenging the dominance of the dollar in global trade and transactions, rather the organization through its enunciated goals is resetting the fundamentals of global trade and economic relations.
“BRICS wasn't created to develop an alternative to the US dollar. It was created to facilitate trade between member countries with like minded goals. That included their right to use their own sovereign currencies in their own bilateral trade…”
Indeed, technology has presented other alternatives to the US dollar in the Blockchain technology which conveniently bypasses the banking system superintended by America. The global SWIFT system which gave advantage to American Banks is about to be challenged.
Digital currencies are also operational.
President Tinubu has boldly led Nigeria into BRICS and made our participation as a partner valid. He put out a strong performance at the recent Brazil BRICS summit.
President Tinubu strikes open a new vista in strategic economic and political partnerships. Nigeria is seeking our new global partners who share same demographic and structural similarities with Nigeria. The emerging economies of Egypt, Indonesia and India have experiences we can share and learn from. BRICS takes us away from the outward suffocation of what they want us to do to looking inward to decide what is important for our people and how we can leverage to accelerate development.
The issues of climate change, pollution, technology and modern agriculture remain dominant and members collaborate and share experiences. Under President Tinubu we have the $1.1 billion dollars Green Imperative project with Brazil that will mechanize agriculture and reduce food insecurity. The $2.5 billion Brazil FDI into Nigeria’s Agriculture and much more.
BRICS is a much waited platform Nigeria needed to embrace Another critical pathway for development. Nigeria must explore useful options in the global market place. After all- “Ona kan Owoja”
