PDP Bigwig Unfazed by Mass Defections to APC: "We're Unbothered"

By Achimi Muktari

FCT, Abuja — As the political landscape shifts dramatically in the lead-up to the 2027 elections, David Itopa, a prominent leader in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has made a bold statement: the party is “unbothered” by the recent wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Despite the loss of key figures, Itopa asserts that the PDP remains deeply connected to the vast majority of Nigerians.

In a recent interview with TrafficNg, Itopa addressed concerns regarding the mass exodus of politicians, including Abubakar Gumi, who recently left the PDP for the APC, resulting in a notable gain for the ruling party in the House of Representatives. "Defections reflect personal interests, not ideology," he asserted, emphasizing that the current political environment is shaped more by individual ambitions than by a commitment to core beliefs.

“It’s important to understand that politics in Nigeria today is largely driven by interest rather than ideology,” Itopa explained. He acknowledged that while some politicians may opt for a change in allegiance, the PDP stands firm in its dedication to serving the broader interests of the Nigerian populace. “The people who are suffering under the APC’s policies are not blind. I am confident that when the time comes, Nigerians will rise up in large numbers to vote them out,” he stated emphatically.

Itopa further reinforced the PDP's reliance on grassroots support, characterizing it as a movement built by the people and for the people. “The PDP has never been the property of a few individuals; it has always banked on the strength of the people,” he proclaimed. His confidence in the party’s future is unwavering, as he believes that a significant portion of the electorate remains aligned with the PDP’s vision.

“We are ready to confront any challenges that may arise. The majority of Nigerians stand with the PDP, and we will be prepared for the upcoming elections,” Itopa concluded, signaling that the party intends to weather the storm of defections and continue advocating for the needs of the citizens it represents.

As the countdown to the elections begins, the dynamics within Nigerian politics promise to remain tumultuous, but the PDP’s commitment to its grassroots supporters may be the cornerstone of its resilience.
