In a bid to ensure maximum participation in the upcoming local government elections, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has declared Friday, January 17, 2025, as a work-free day for public servants.

The highly anticipated council polls are set to take place across the state’s 18 local government areas on Saturday, January 18, 2025. The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) confirmed that no fewer than 10 political parties have fielded candidates for the exercise.

A Civic Call to Action

In a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, the work-free day aims to enable government workers to travel to their communities to exercise their civic rights.

“The Local Government Election in Ondo State has been scheduled by the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) to hold on Saturday, 18th of January 2025.

“To this end, the Ondo State Government has declared Friday, 17th of January 2025, as a Work-Free Day for Public Servants in the State to enable them to travel to their various communities to exercise their civic responsibilities,” the statement read.

Governor’s Call for Peaceful Elections

Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasized the importance of a free, fair, and peaceful election, urging all stakeholders to uphold democratic values.

“This is not just an election; it’s an opportunity for Ondo citizens to choose leaders who will directly influence grassroots development. Let us all play our parts responsibly,” he urged.

What to Expect on Election Day

ODIEC has assured the public of its readiness to conduct a transparent and credible election. With 10 political parties in the race, expectations are high for an engaging electoral process.

This election is significant as it will determine leadership across the local government councils—a critical tier of governance tasked with delivering services closest to the people.

Civic Responsibility Encouraged

The declaration of a work-free day highlights the state government’s commitment to fostering active civic participation. Citizens are encouraged to seize the opportunity to make their voices heard through the ballot box.

As Ondo State heads to the polls, all eyes will be on the electorate to ensure the exercise serves as a model of democracy in action.
