Okowa

Okowa Speaks Out Amidst EFCC Probe: “It’s Unfortunate, But I Am Ready”

In a dramatic twist to ongoing political intrigue, former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has addressed allegations of misappropriating N1.3 trillion during his administration. Speaking from his Asaba residence on Thursday, November 14, during a solidarity visit from the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council, Okowa dismissed the accusations as baseless and politically motivated.

The former governor, who served from 2015 to 2023, has found himself at the center of an investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The anti-graft agency alleges that Okowa diverted public funds and used them to acquire properties in Asaba and Abuja.

However, the ex-governor is standing firm, claiming the figures presented in the accusations are not only exaggerated but impossible. “In politics, there are many things one must face, but it’s unfortunate when baseless accusations are presented to the media,” Okowa said. “To claim that someone could misappropriate such an amount implies taking N16 to N20 billion monthly for 96 months. This is simply unreasonable.”

Facing the EFCC Head-On

Okowa, who was also the vice-presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections, affirmed his willingness to cooperate fully with the EFCC. He revealed that during his recent arrest and interrogation by the commission, he confidently addressed every question posed to him.

“I have no fear about this probe. My conscience is clear, and I have faith in the truth,” Okowa asserted.

Traditional Rulers Lend Support

The Delta State Traditional Rulers Council, led by Major-General Felix Mujakperuo (retd.), the Orodje of Okpe, pledged their solidarity with Okowa during their visit. The council expressed concern over what they described as the weaponization of anti-corruption agencies for political purposes.

Delta State Government Backs Okowa

The Delta State Government has also come to Okowa’s defense, urging citizens to remain calm and avoid unnecessary speculation. In an official statement, the government reiterated Okowa’s presumed innocence until proven guilty and described the situation as a case of political victimization.

Political Undercurrents?

Okowa’s ordeal comes at a time when Nigeria’s political landscape is rife with rivalry and accusations. Observers suggest the EFCC’s probe might be more than a mere quest for accountability.

“Former governors who transition into opposition politics often find themselves under the EFCC’s radar,” said a political analyst who wished to remain anonymous.

What’s Next?

While Okowa continues to assert his innocence, the EFCC remains tight-lipped about the next steps in its investigation. The case underscores the delicate balance between anti-corruption efforts and political interference in Nigeria’s governance.

For now, Deltans and political watchers across the country are waiting to see how this high-stakes drama unfolds. Will the EFCC’s investigation uncover substantive evidence, or will this become another example of politically motivated persecution?
