Obasa Storms Lagos Assembly, Dkereclares Himself Spea

By Achimi Muktar

In a dramatic turn of events, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has returned to the Lagos State House of Assembly, boldly dismissing rumors of his impeachment. Amidst cheers from supporters and the presence of security personnel, Obasa made it clear: he was never removed.

"I Was Never Impeached!" – Obasa Declares

Addressing journalists at the Assembly Complex, the embattled Speaker denounced reports of his removal, calling the entire process unconstitutional and undemocratic.

“I have told you repeatedly, I have never been removed; there’s nothing like impeachment. I have said it openly,” Obasa declared.

He insisted that due process was not followed, emphasizing that he is not against impeachment, but it must be done lawfully.

“The impeachment or whatever was undemocratic and unconstitutional… In doing that, you must follow due process. I’m not against being removed. If I do that, then I’m not democratic,” he stated.

The Allegations and Impeachment Drama

Obasa’s return comes weeks after his reported impeachment on January 13, 2025, over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

An anti-corruption group, the Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition, accused Obasa of financial misappropriation, citing extravagant spending, including a N200 million budget for the Assembly’s recent 22nd Thanksgiving service.

Another shocking allegation suggested that N17 billion was used to construct a gate at the Assembly Complex—an accusation Obasa vehemently denied, calling it "ridiculous and untrue."

“The Lagos State House of Assembly does not have any such funds,” Assembly spokesperson Hon. Stephen Ogundipe clarified.

Despite the controversy, the House moved forward and elected Mojisola Miranda (Apapa I State Constituency) as the new Speaker after Obasa’s reported impeachment.

Political Power Play or Real Stability?

Obasa’s return raises serious questions: Is he staging a comeback, or was his impeachment illegitimate from the start?

In his latest remarks, he sought to reassure party members and the public of unity within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos.

“Our party is one. We are all brothers and sisters,” he stated, dismissing any speculation of deep divisions.

However, political analysts believe this public display of defiance is a strategic move to regain control and solidify his influence within the Lagos political landscape.

What’s Next?

With two rival Speakers now claiming legitimacy and a divided Assembly, Lagos State could be heading for a political showdown. Will Obasa reclaim his seat officially, or will the new leadership hold its ground?
