Nnamdi Kanu’s Wife Finally Speaks on His Court Apology

By Achimi Muktar

The wife of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has finally broken her silence on his recent courtroom apology. In a revealing statement, Mrs. Uchechi Kanu explained that her husband’s legal team made a strategic decision to restore decorum in the courtroom and pave the way for a fair trial.

What Really Happened in Court?

Nnamdi Kanu had previously lashed out at the Federal High Court and Justice Binta Nyako, leading to her recusal from his case. However, his new lead counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), saw the need to diffuse tensions and ensure Kanu gets a fair hearing.

“Chief Kanu Agabi’s stature demanded it; he couldn’t represent Onyendu without restoring decorum acceptable to the Abuja bench in particular and the judiciary in general.” — Mrs. Uchechi Kanu

She emphasized that Chief Agabi’s move was not a sign of weakness, but a deliberate legal strategy to balance Kanu’s justified anger with the court’s authority.

Judge Acknowledges Kanu’s Ordeal

In a surprising twist, Justice James Omotosho, who presided over the hearing, apologized to Kanu for the prolonged delay and mishandling of his trial. This rare moment of judicial acknowledgment validated Kanu’s long struggle in court.

“Justice James Omotosho presiding, also apologized to Onyendu for the prolonged delay and mishandling of his trial over the years, acknowledging his ordeal at the hands of the Federal High Court Abuja.” — Mrs. Kanu

Why Did Kanu Apologize?

Through Chief Agabi, Kanu tendered a written apology to:

✅ Justice Binta Nyako – for his courtroom outburst.
✅ Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) – the Federal Government’s lawyer, whom he had previously criticized.

Chief Agabi explained that while Kanu had every reason to be angry, his words crossed a line, and an apology was necessary to refocus on the legal battle ahead.

“My lord, in expressing his anger, he attacked the Federal High Court, he attacked Justice Binta Nyako, he attacked the prosecutor and his own lawyers.” — Chief Agabi, SAN

“I hereby apologise to Justice Binta Nyako. She did not deserve the unjust attack. I apologise to Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN). He deserves the highest respect. He was castigated without reservations.”

What’s Next for Kanu?

Justice Omotosho, while acknowledging Kanu’s grievances, has ordered an accelerated trial to ensure his case is resolved swiftly.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Kanu has urged supporters to read the full legal statement before making judgments, emphasizing that this is a step towards peaceful resolution, not surrender.

“Chief Agabi spoke in his own personal capacity and his vision for an amicable resolution (dialogue) and peaceful co-existence. It is not rocket science.” — Mrs. Kanu
