Nigeria’s Power Generation Hits Record 6003MW Under Tinubu
By Achimi Muktar
Nigeria has hit a historic power generation milestone, reaching 6003 megawatts (MW) under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, according to Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.
Adelabu, speaking in Abuja during a visit by the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) on Wednesday, described the achievement as unprecedented, considering the country took nearly four decades to move from 2000MW to 4000MW. Yet, in under two years, the current administration has added 2003MW—a feat that many believe signals a new era in Nigeria’s energy sector.
Power Surge – But Grid Instability Persists
Despite the surge in electricity generation, frequent grid collapses remain a pressing issue. Adelabu admitted that while power output has grown significantly, infrastructure weaknesses continue to threaten stability. He challenged Nigerian engineers to step up and play a greater role in reinforcing the national grid.
Engineering Solutions on the Horizon?
NSE President Margret Oguntala assured the minister that the engineering community is committed to sustaining this progress. She pledged support in driving technical innovation, improving capacity development, and finding lasting solutions to Nigeria’s power challenges.
While the 6003MW milestone is a breakthrough, many Nigerians are asking: Will this translate into stable electricity for homes and businesses? Or will grid collapses continue to dim the lights on this achievement?
