In a major breakthrough for international travel, Nigeria and Canada have finalized a Code-Sharing Agreement under a new Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA), allowing airlines from both countries to collaborate on flight routes and improve air connectivity.
A Game-Changer for Travelers
The agreement, signed on Friday by Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, aims to enhance passenger convenience by creating a seamless travel experience between Nigeria and Canada.
The deal will allow airlines from both nations to share flight routes, giving passengers more flight options, better connections, and improved service efficiency.
Keyamo’s Announcement
Keyamo, who signed the agreement in Abuja, revealed on his official X account that his Canadian counterpart had already signed the document in Ottawa earlier this month. The document was transmitted to Nigeria through Canada’s High Commissioner, Ambassador Pasquale Salvaggio, who represented Canada at the signing ceremony.
“This afternoon, on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I signed my portion of the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and Canada, which is specifically on Code-sharing. My Canadian counterpart signed her portion earlier in the month in Ottawa and transmitted the document through the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Pasquale Salvaggio, who represented Canada at the signing ceremony today,” Keyamo stated.
What This Means for Passengers
✅ More Flight Options: Nigerian and Canadian airlines can now offer passengers seamless connections between the two countries.
✅ Lower Airfares: Increased competition may lead to more affordable ticket prices.
✅ Improved Convenience: Travelers can book single tickets that include multiple airlines, reducing travel stress.
✅ Better Airline Collaboration: Airlines can share aircraft and routes, ensuring efficient use of resources.
Boosting Bilateral Relations
The Nigeria-Canada Code-Sharing Agreement marks a significant milestone in the aviation sector and strengthens the diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations. With this agreement, both countries are poised for greater trade, tourism, and investment opportunities.
What’s Next?
