New Army Chief Declares War on Terror: Lakurawa Militants to Face the Heat

In a bold declaration of intent, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, the newly confirmed Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has vowed to crush the Lakurawa terrorist group plaguing Nigeria’s northwest. Oluyede made this assertion on Monday during a press briefing at the State House in Abuja after a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu.
A Unified Front Against Terrorism
Oluyede underscored the importance of regional collaboration in combating the Lakurawa group, known for its violent campaigns and radical ideology.
“We are hitting them hard at the Nigerian end. When they flee to Niger Republic, it has been a challenge. Now that Niger Republic is actively coming on board, Lakurawa will soon be a thing of the past,” he stated confidently.
He highlighted the growing cooperation between Nigeria and neighboring countries, emphasizing a unified approach to tackling terrorism. “These threats cross borders, and by working together, we can neutralize them more effectively,” Oluyede added.
The Lakurawa Threat
Emerging in Sokoto State around 2016 as a self-defense militia, the Lakurawa group evolved into a radicalized faction imposing strict religious laws and disrupting local governance. The group has expanded its operations into Kebbi State, orchestrating violent attacks and recruiting local youths with financial incentives, reportedly offering up to N1 million per recruit.
The Defence Headquarters has identified Lakurawa as a terrorist organization with ties to extremist elements in Mali and Niger. Their activities have caused widespread displacement, economic disruption, and the erosion of traditional authority in affected communities.
A Vision for a Secure Nigeria
Having officially assumed office on Monday as the 24th Chief of Army Staff, Oluyede pledged to adopt innovative strategies to address Nigeria’s security challenges.
“I am here to reassure Mr. President and Nigerians that I will explore new approaches to tackle insecurity and achieve significant results,” he said.
During his visit to troops in the North-West and North-East, Oluyede emphasized the importance of troop morale and operational efficiency.
“I’ve spoken with officers and soldiers to make them realize the urgency of ending insecurity in Nigeria. I’ve made it clear that I expect better results as we do things differently,” he remarked.
Symbolic Transition of Leadership
In a ceremony at the Army Headquarters, the lowering and hoisting of the Nigerian Army command flag symbolized Oluyede’s official assumption of duties. The Director of Army Public Relations, Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, described Oluyede’s leadership style as inclusive and collaborative.
“Innovative thinking will be central to addressing the rapidly evolving security landscape,” Nwachukwu said. Oluyede also commended the dedication of the late COAS, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, whose untimely passing in November left a legacy of service.
Charting a New Path Forward
With renewed determination, Oluyede urged commanders to develop creative strategies to combat terrorism and insurgency across volatile regions. He reassured troops of unwavering support and emphasized innovation as key to staying ahead of emerging threats.
As Nigeria’s military gears up under Oluyede’s leadership, the nation watches closely, hopeful that this marks the beginning of the end for the Lakurawa insurgency and other security challenges.
