Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Slapped with 6-Month Suspension!"
By Achimi Muktar
The Nigerian Senate has handed down a six-month suspension to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, following allegations of misconduct and repeated violations of Senate rules. The decision, reached through a unanimous voice vote, has sparked controversy and heated debates across political circles.
The Suspension Drama Unfolds
The Senate's verdict came after the Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, chaired by Senator Neda Imasuen, presented a report outlining Akpoti-Uduaghan’s alleged offenses. These included defying the Senate leadership, causing disruptions in the chamber, and submitting a petition against Senate President Godswill Akpabio that violated procedural rules.
As the suspension was announced, Akpoti-Uduaghan defiantly stood up, microphone still on, and declared, "This injustice will not be sustained." Moments later, her mic was switched off.
Why Was She Suspended?
Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Monguno accused the Kogi Central senator of consistently refusing to stand during the Senate President’s procession—an act deemed disrespectful under the Senate’s Standing Orders 55(1).
The Ethics Committee also cited her refusal to vacate her reassigned seat in the chamber, which led to disruptions during a February 20 plenary session. The committee’s report described her behavior as "unethical and unbecoming of a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria."
Additionally, the committee faulted her for failing to appear before them to explain herself despite multiple invitations.
Sexual Harassment Allegation Against Akpabio
The situation took an even more dramatic turn when Akpoti-Uduaghan re-submitted a petition accusing Senate President Akpabio of sexual harassment. While she claimed the petition was signed by a constituent, the Senate had previously rejected a similar complaint because it was signed by her—a violation of Senate rules.
Despite her insistence, the petition was referred to the Ethics Committee for review.
Senate’s Punishment: A Harsh Blow
The Senate’s punishment is severe:
A six-month suspension from all legislative activities.
Locking up her office and confiscating Senate property.
Suspension of her salary, allowances, and security details.
A total ban from the National Assembly premises.
Prohibition from identifying herself as a senator, both locally and internationally.
The Senate, however, left room for reconsideration, stating that if Akpoti-Uduaghan submits a written apology, her suspension could be reviewed.
Akpabio Responds: “I Attended Her Wedding”
Reacting to the sexual harassment allegation, Akpabio dismissed the claims and recounted his close relationship with Akpoti-Uduaghan’s family.
“The person we are talking about here is the wife of my very good friend—or so I thought,” Akpabio said. He recalled attending her wedding and staying at a hotel within the Dangote Cement Factory in Kogi due to poor airport lighting.
As Senate President, Akpabio asserted his authority to interpret and enforce Senate rules, saying, "I’m in the best position to interpret the rules of the Senate."
Calls for Leniency, But No Mercy
While Minority Leader Abba Moro acknowledged Akpoti-Uduaghan’s misconduct, he pleaded for a reduced suspension period of three months instead of six. However, several senators insisted on strict penalties to maintain the integrity of the Senate.
Senator Francis Fadahunsi warned Akpabio about trusting fellow senators too much, stating, "The only friends you have are your wife and children. Some may be your friend today, but we don’t know what will happen tomorrow."
What Next for Akpoti-Uduaghan?
With her legislative career temporarily on hold, the embattled senator now faces the choice of apologizing to the Senate or fighting back. Given her defiant stance, it remains to be seen whether she will bow to pressure or take her battle to the courts.
One thing is certain: the drama in Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber is far from over.
