NASS Stop wasting money on constitutional amendment, rather create a new constitution- Tunji Abayomi

A human rights activist and constitutional lawyer, Dr. Tunji Abayomi has expressed concerns about the ongoing constitutional review by the National Assembly, describing it as a "wasteful adventure or misadventure." He believes that Nigeria doesn't have a constitution, but rather Decree 24 of 1999, which was imposed by the military government. According to him, amending this decree is futile and a waste of resources.

He said, "What happened to the last constitutional review exercises done all within 26 years, where trillions of Naira were spent with no positive outcome to Nigerians?"

Dr. Abayomi made these remarks earlier today on TVC’s This Morning show in Lagos.

He said, "Stop Amending and Create a New Constitution, he  advises the National Assembly to stop working on amending the 1999 Constitution and instead focus on creating a new constitution that truly represents the interests of Nigerians

He questions the legitimacy of the 1999 Constitution, stating that it was not created by the people but rather imposed by the military government. Abayomi believes the current conducting of Zonal Public Hearings on the constitutional amendment process across the country is a waste of national resources, as previous amendments have not been implemented.
He stated that we need a People-Centered constitution rather than one that serves narrow political interests

Abayomi's stance is that the National Assembly should prioritize creating a new constitution that reflects the aspirations and needs of Nigerians rather than wasting resources on amending a document that is fundamentally flawed
