May Day! Strike Looms as App-Based Transport Workers Protest Exploitation
By Mabeni Aboh
App-based transport workers, including drivers in Nigeria, have announced a national strike scheduled for May 1st, 2025, International Workers' Day, to protest what they describe as "decades of exploitation and corporate arrogance" from ride-hailing giants such as Uber, Bolt, Lagride, Indrive, and Rida.
The drivers, under the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), accuse the companies of treating them as disposable tools while raking in billions from their sweat. AUATON's Public Relations Officer, Steven Iwindoye, said the companies have ignored their concerns and disrespected their rights.
The union is calling for a 24-hour shutdown of all ride-hailing apps, urging drivers to switch off their apps and stay off the road to mount pressure on the corporations. According to Iwindoye, the companies only understand the language of economic pressure.
The strike aims to send a clear message that drivers won't be ignored or disrespected. The union plans to issue a list of non-negotiable demands and escalate their engagement with labor groups, human rights organisations, and the media to pressure governments and companies alike.
The planned strike marks a significant escalation in the global struggle of gig workers, many of whom operate without benefits, job security, or legal protections, yet face rising operational costs and shrinking income due to app algorithm manipulation and corporate policies. The union is seeking support from the public and other stakeholders to amplify their message and build support for their cause.
