MTN Nigeria Shifts to Paper-Based SIMs in Push for Sustainability

MTN Nigeria has announced the introduction of paper-based biodegradable eco-friendly SIM cards, aligning with its Project Zero goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve net zero emissions by 2040. This move comes after the Nigerian Communications Commission's (NCC) plans to issue a revised corporate governance code, focusing on mandatory sustainability reporting for telecom operators.

*Benefits of Paper-Based SIMs*

- *Reduced Waste Pollution*: The biodegradable SIM cards can naturally decompose and are recyclable, reducing waste pollution.

  • *Lower Carbon Emissions*: The production and disposal of paper-based SIMs have a lower carbon footprint compared to traditional plastic SIM cards.
  • *Eradicating Plastic SIM Problems*: The shift eliminates issues like landfill disposal, limited recycling options, and waste pollution associated with plastic SIM cards.

According to Tobe Okigbo, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, "Our new eco-friendly SIM cards represent part of our continuous commitment to environmental responsibility." Adekemi Adisa, General Manager of Sustainability and Shared Value, added that the recyclable SIM cards encourage customers to make eco-friendly choices, reducing waste and paving the way for a more environmentally conscious future [1).

This initiative is part of MTN's broader sustainability vision, which includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting digital and financial inclusion, and driving sustainable societies ¹.
