Full-Time HND Graduates in Nigeria Can Now Join NYSC

By Achimi Muktar

In a landmark decision, the Federal Government of Nigeria has officially approved the mobilization of full-time Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The long-awaited announcement was made by Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, Minister of Education, and confirmed in a press release by Boriwo Folasade, Director of Press & Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education.

“The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, is pleased to announce the resolution of the long-standing issue regarding the mobilization of Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Following a dialogue with the Director-General of NYSC, the Minister confirmed that only full-time HND graduates are eligible and can now proceed with their mobilization.”

Who Is Eligible for NYSC Mobilization?

✅ Full-time HND graduates CAN now enroll in NYSC.
❌ Part-time HND graduates remain ineligible for mobilization.

The decision marks a major victory for thousands of polytechnic graduates who were previously excluded from the one-year mandatory national service, a requirement that has long been exclusive to university graduates.

NBTE to Oversee HND Graduate Mobilization

To ensure a smooth transition, the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has been directed to fast-track the collation of data for eligible HND graduates.

“A circular has been sent to all Rectors of Polytechnics, instructing them to upload the necessary graduate data onto the newly created HND admission portal,” Dr. Alausa stated.

This newly developed portal will serve as the official database for NYSC mobilization, ensuring proper documentation and eliminating past challenges linked to admission records.

Urgent Call to Action for HND Graduates

The Minister urged all eligible full-time HND graduates to take advantage of this opportunity and proceed with their NYSC mobilization without delay.

“The Honourable Minister urges all eligible full-time HND graduates to take full advantage of this opportunity and proceed with their mobilization without delay.”

This development aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to equity, fairness, and inclusivity in Nigeria’s education system, ensuring that all qualified graduates have access to opportunities that enhance national development.

Why This Matters

A Higher National Diploma (HND) is a vocational and practical qualification awarded by polytechnics and technical institutions. It equips students with specialized knowledge in engineering, business, technology, and applied sciences, making them vital contributors to Nigeria’s workforce.

For years, polytechnic graduates have campaigned for equal recognition, and this decision represents a huge win in their fight for fairness.

What’s Next?

With the NYSC mobilization now open to HND graduates, many are wondering: Will this lead to salary parity between HND and university graduates in the public sector? Only time will tell.
