By Achimi muktar
Nigeria is on the brink of an economic revolution, with ambitions to become a trillion-dollar economy, according to Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy. Speaking at the launch of a training program for Data Protection Officers (DPOs) in Abuja, Tijani outlined the administration’s roadmap for transforming the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and leveraging technology to drive sustainable growth.
ICT: The Game-Changer for Economic Growth
Dr. Tijani projected a significant rise in Nigeria’s GDP within the next two years, with 21% of this growth driven by the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector. He emphasized the government’s investment in digital infrastructure and innovation, citing Artificial Intelligence (AI), e-governance, and digital health services as critical components of the strategy.
“Nigeria’s prosperity is just around the corner,” Tijani assured, highlighting that ICT is the backbone of the country’s envisioned economic transformation.
Harnessing Nigeria’s Youth and Innovation Potential
Central to this vision is Nigeria’s youthful population, which Tijani described as a vital asset for driving entrepreneurship and innovation. Through the "Renewed Hope Agenda" championed by President Bola Tinubu, policies are being crafted to tap into the energy and creativity of young Nigerians to achieve this ambitious economic milestone.
Youth Affairs Minister Ayodele Olawande also emphasized the administration’s commitment to inclusivity and creating opportunities for young people. He spoke of recalibrating the Youth Ministry to foster collaborations that deliver impactful results across sectors.
Building a Data-Protected Future
The event in Abuja marked the start of a national certification program for 500 Data Protection Officers, aimed at bolstering Nigeria’s digital economy while safeguarding citizens' data.
Dr. Vincent Olatunji, CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), revealed that the initiative originally planned for 3,000 officers but was scaled down due to financial constraints. Each officer’s training and certification cost $2,000, reflecting the global standards the program aims to meet.
“This certification will unlock countless global opportunities, as there is a massive demand for data protection officers worldwide,” Olatunji stated.
Policies with Global Impact
Tijani believes the administration’s digital transformation agenda will position Nigeria as a leading hub for tech-driven solutions in Africa. The focus on AI and digital health services aims to improve lives while stimulating economic growth, showcasing Nigeria as a country ready to compete on the global stage.
The Trillion-Dollar Goal
More than just a vision, the trillion-dollar economy target reflects confidence in Nigeria’s potential, bolstered by its population size and the vibrancy of its youth. Tijani’s optimism suggests a future where Nigeria’s economy thrives not just locally but globally, redefining its place in the world.
The message is clear: with strategic investments and visionary policies, Nigeria is ready to leap into a new era of prosperity. Whether the plan succeeds will depend on execution, but the foundation is being laid for a brighter economic future.
