Federal Government Unveils Livestock Transformation Programme in Plateau, Promises Thousands of New Job

By Achimi muktar

In a bold and unprecedented move to transform Nigeria’s livestock industry and generate jobs, the Federal Government has officially launched the National Livestock Transformation Programme in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State—and it’s set to change everything.

The programme, spearheaded by the newly established Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, was inaugurated by Minister Idi Maiha on Thursday at the Wase Grazing Reserve, and it marks the first major rollout of the Renewed Hope Agenda under President Bola Tinubu's administration.

“We are here to prove that transformation is not just a promise—it’s already happening under President Tinubu’s leadership,” Maiha declared as he unveiled plans to reshape Wase into a livestock innovation hub.

Here’s What’s Coming to Wase:

Mass housing for herders and their families

Earth dams for year-round pasture irrigation

Veterinary clinics for animal care

Primary healthcare centers for residents

Solar-powered infrastructure to reduce climate impact

The goal? To stop nomadic movement by making grazing reserves fully functional, self-sustaining communities powered by modern amenities and green energy.

Engaging the Power Players

Minister Maiha emphasized the importance of stakeholder buy-in for a successful rollout. He revealed that he had met with Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Gbong Gwom Jos, the Emir of Wase, and other key leaders to ensure a smooth implementation.

“Everyone is on board because this is a win-win—jobs, economic growth, and stability,” he said.

An Economic Boom in the Making

With over 100 hectares of land earmarked for the project, the Wase Grazing Reserve is expected to host over 20,000 cattle, setting the stage for a livestock value chain explosion.

“We’re not just bringing cows—we’re bringing in milk processing plants, red meat factories, cold rooms, and even energy generation from cattle waste,” Maiha explained. “This is how you turn a grazing reserve into a goldmine.”

Plateau Backs the Vision

Dr. Sunday Akpa, Plateau State Commissioner for Livestock Development, confirmed the state's full backing.

“This initiative aligns perfectly with our mission to elevate the livestock sector. We’re ready to support its full implementation,” Akpa said.

From job creation to agribusiness opportunities, and even organic fertilizer for farmers, this programme is poised to spark an economic and agricultural revolution in Plateau State.

So the question now is—if Plateau is the pilot, which state will be next to ride the livestock transformation wave?
