FG Shuts Down Ibadan Airport for International Makeover

By Achimi Muktar

In a major move to transform Ibadan’s aviation landscape, the Federal Government has approved the temporary closure of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport (SLAA) to facilitate an extensive upgrade aimed at elevating it to international standards.

This decision aligns with the Oyo State Government’s vision to position Ibadan as a key player in Nigeria’s aviation sector. The announcement was made on Saturday by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

According to FAAN, the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has officially closed the airport’s runway, citing adherence to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regulations.

“In compliance with aviation safety standards and processes, the closure became imperative to ensure the safety of passengers as well as airport personnel during the upgrade,” FAAN stated.

What’s Changing at Ibadan Airport?

The remodeling project will introduce critical infrastructure upgrades designed to boost safety, improve passenger experience, and enable international flight operations. Though no official reopening date has been provided, speculation suggests that the airport could remain shut for up to six months as part of the extensive transformation.

A Long-Awaited Dream for Oyo State
The push to upgrade SLAA began in August 2024, when the Oyo State Government unveiled an ambitious plan to expand and modernize the airport, making it capable of meeting global aviation standards. The project is expected to enhance trade, tourism, and connectivity, reinforcing Ibadan’s economic potential.

What This Means for Travelers
For now, flights in and out of Ibadan are suspended, meaning travelers will have to seek alternative routes via Lagos or Abuja. FAAN has appealed for public understanding, emphasizing that the temporary inconvenience will pave the way for a world-class international airport that will put Ibadan on the global aviation map.

As the state gears up for this historic upgrade, one thing is certain—Ibadan Airport is about to enter a new era.
