FG Launches N10m Support Scheme for Tertiary Institution Staff

The Federal Government has introduced the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund (TISSF) to improve the welfare and career development of academic and non-academic staff in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

Each eligible staff member can access loans of up to ₦10 million, capped at 33.3% of their gross annual salary, to support needs such as transportation, medical expenses, and small-scale businesses like poultry farming.

Unveiled during a high-level stakeholder meeting in Abuja, the scheme is part of a broader strategy to reposition Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, according to Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa.

The loan programme, to be administered by the Bank of Industry, includes a robust monitoring and evaluation framework. It was developed with input from staff unions, institutional heads, and other stakeholders.

Officials at the launch—including TETFund representatives, vice-chancellors, rectors, and provosts—hailed the initiative as timely for boosting morale and improving institutional performance.
