FG Declares May 1 Public Holiday
By Achimi Muktar
The Federal Government has officially declared Thursday, May 1, 2025, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Workers’ Day Celebration, reaffirming its commitment to honouring Nigerian workers as the backbone of the nation.
In a statement released by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, the announcement was made on behalf of the government by Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. He praised Nigerian workers for their relentless dedication, innovation, and resilience, describing them as the reason behind Nigeria’s continued relevance on the global stage.
“There is dignity in labour,” the Minister emphasized. “Your daily commitment is the engine powering national development.”
Tunji-Ojo didn’t stop there. In a message packed with optimism, he urged workers to “raise the bar of their trade” to drive improvements in governance and ensure equitable access to the country’s wealth for all Nigerians. He reaffirmed the Tinubu-led administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, calling on citizens to remain hopeful and united in the face of ongoing economic and social challenges.
This year’s Workers’ Day theme zeroes in on “safety and health at work in a changing climate,” a timely issue in a world facing increasing environmental and occupational threats. The Minister noted that the government remains steadfast in its resolve to create safe and thriving work environments, while also encouraging collaboration on sustainable, climate-friendly labour practices.
Coming just days after the Easter holidays, the May 1 celebration offers not just a break from routine, but a moment for introspection, appreciation, and renewed purpose among Nigeria’s workforce.
As Nigerians prepare to mark Workers’ Day this Thursday, the Federal Government is calling for not just celebration—but elevation: of standards, of productivity, and of hope.
