Controversial Praise: Tinubu Calls Wike a ‘Good Man’ Amid Land Grabbing Allegations

In a move stirring nationwide debate, President Bola Tinubu has openly defended Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), hailing him as a “good man” and a “performing minister,” despite mounting criticisms over Wike’s controversial land revocation policies in Abuja.

The President’s endorsement comes at a time when thousands of Nigerians are grappling with the aftermath of mass land takeovers. These policies, spearheaded by Wike, have left numerous residents homeless and incited public outcry over alleged misuse of power and land reallocations to politically connected cronies.

Tinubu, however, appears unshaken by the growing discontent. Addressing the controversies during a recent event, he dismissed the criticisms, pointing to what he perceives as a lack of adherence to regulations by Nigerians.

“Nyesom Wike is a good man. He is a performing minister. Nigerians lack compliance, period!” Tinubu stated, emphasizing issues such as late payment of ground rents and non-compliance with urban development rules as the root causes of the uproar. “We don't pay our ground rent on time. We don't prioritize something to do. We see compliance as inconveniences. I doff my hat for him.”

While Tinubu’s defense of Wike’s actions has drawn applause from some quarters, many Nigerians remain deeply skeptical. Critics argue that the President’s remarks are dismissive of the real suffering endured by those affected by Wike’s policies. Allegations of corruption, including the use of “front companies” such as Saravera and Aleed Construction Limited to reallocate prime lands, have only added fuel to the fire.

Social media platforms are abuzz with reactions to Tinubu’s statements, with the public expressing outrage over what they see as tacit approval of Wike’s alleged land-grabbing tactics. Calls for Wike’s removal have grown louder, yet Tinubu remains firm in his stance, asserting that his cabinet is performing well across the board and signaling no intention to shake things up.

The controversy surrounding Wike’s tenure as FCT Minister is far from over, and Tinubu’s unwavering support for him has only deepened the divide between the administration and a disenchanted public. As the nation watches closely, the question remains: Will Tinubu’s gamble on Wike pay off, or will the growing dissatisfaction force a rethink?
