BREAKING: Tinubu Orders National Flags at Half-Staff for 7 Days in Honour of Late President Muhammadu Buhari

Emergency FEC session to hold Tuesday; full state honours planned

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered that all national flags across Nigeria be flown at half-staff for seven days, in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died earlier today in London, United Kingdom.

The late Nigerian leader, who had been battling an undisclosed illness, passed away while receiving treatment. He was 81.

In a solemn statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu hailed his predecessor as “a patriot, a soldier, and a statesman whose legacy of service and sacrifice endures.”

“As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today,” Tinubu stated.

The president also announced that an emergency Federal Executive Council (FEC) session will be convened on Tuesday, dedicated entirely to honouring Buhari’s life and contributions.

“We honour his service. We reflect on his legacy. And we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul,” Tinubu added.
“The Federal Government will accord President Buhari full state honours, befitting his towering contributions to our country.
May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus. And may his life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness.”

Buhari’s Legacy
Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, after previously leading the country as a military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985.

Known for his strict anti-corruption stance and conservative leadership style, Buhari remained a towering figure in Nigeria’s political landscape long after leaving office.
