Senate President Godswill Akpabio has come forward to defend President Bola Tinubu, asserting that the current economic and social challenges plaguing Nigeria are not the fault of the present administration but a result of years of past mismanagement. Speaking at the UNICAL '87 Law Class Reunion in Calabar, Akpabio assured Nigerians that, despite the difficulties, Tinubu’s government would leave behind a legacy that secures a brighter future for the nation.

Addressing his former classmates, senators, and students at the University of Calabar, Akpabio explained that previous governments failed to take critical economic steps when necessary, leading to the struggles Nigerians are currently facing. He argued that the country’s lack of infrastructure and economic preparedness had made it vulnerable to global economic challenges.

“The hardships we are witnessing today weren’t caused by the present administration but are the outcome of years of neglect and maladministration,” Akpabio said. He urged Nigerians to remain hopeful, stating that Tinubu's administration is working for posterity, not short-term gains. “We are laying the foundation for lasting legacies that will ensure a better future for generations to come.”

During the reunion, Akpabio led his law class to visit Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu and the Vice-Chancellor of UNICAL, Professor Florence Obi, where they discussed ways to support the university. On behalf of the class, Akpabio announced a donation of two Coaster buses to the Faculty of Law and the Student Union Government, with Governor Otu pledging to partner with the alumni on further initiatives.

Experts Link Economic Hardship to Rising Cybercrime Among Nigerian Youths

Meanwhile, security experts have warned that Nigeria’s economic challenges and weakened family structures are fueling a dangerous rise in cybercrimes among the nation’s youth. Speaking at the launch of the book Cybercrime, Digital Forensic Readiness, and Financial Crime Investigation in Abuja, author Tombari Sibe highlighted how the high unemployment rate and social instability have driven many young Nigerians toward online fraud.

Sibe noted that, despite efforts by law enforcement, cybercrime continues to rise due to a lack of coordinated research and forensic capabilities within agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigeria Police Force. He called for urgent improvements in digital forensic resources to combat this growing threat effectively.

As Nigeria grapples with economic adversity, experts fear that without swift action, the rise of cybercrime could tarnish the country’s global reputation even further.
