Air Peace has suspended all flight operations nationwide
Air Peace has suspended all flight operations nationwide
Yakubu Haruna Yakubu
Due to a strike by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) workers. The strike, which began on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, is over unresolved welfare issues, including financial benefits such as wage awards, special allowances, and back pay tied to the 2019 minimum wage.
Reasons Behind the Suspension
Air Peace suspended flights because NiMet is responsible for issuing critical weather reports, particularly Current Nowcast of Hazardous Weather (CNH) reports, essential for safe landings, especially during the rainy season. Without these reports, flight safety cannot be guaranteed.¹
Impact on Passengers
The airline has apologized for the inconvenience and assured passengers that they will be contacted with updates and options for rescheduling their flights. Passengers can expect²:
- Disruptions to their travel plans
- Possible delays and cancellations
- Updates from the airline on rescheduling options
NiMet Strike Background
The NiMet strike is backed by three industry unions: National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), and Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP). The unions claim that NiMet management has failed to honor agreements and prioritize vital training programs over executive retreats.
