2027 Showdown: APC Claims It Will Be ‘Very Difficult’ to Unseat Tinubu—Here’s Why
By Achimi Muktar
With the 2027 presidential election looming, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has confidently declared that it will be extremely difficult for anyone to defeat President Bola Tinubu. Citing two major reasons, the party claims that Tinubu’s grip on power remains solid, and the main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is too fractured to pose a serious threat.
In an interview with The Punch, Bala Ibrahim, APC’s national publicity director, outlined why the party believes Tinubu is on track to secure another term. First, he credited the president’s ongoing economic reforms, which he says are steering Nigeria’s economy toward recovery. By 2026, as Nigerians begin to see the benefits of these reforms, Ibrahim argues, support for Tinubu will surge.
“We expect to start seeing the fruits of these reforms right around the time of the election,” Ibrahim stated. “That should be around 2026 and 2027. It is at that time people will start clapping for the party and the president.”
Secondly, Ibrahim pointed to the internal crisis within the PDP, which has weakened the party that once ruled Nigeria for 16 years. According to him, the disarray within the PDP, coupled with its failure to resolve its own internal conflicts, makes it unlikely for the opposition to mount a serious challenge in 2027.
“It will be almost impossible for someone to come from the outside, particularly an outsider that has failed the country before—an outsider that cannot contain its own crisis—to think of defeating the incumbent. It will be very difficult,” Ibrahim asserted.
However, the PDP has hit back, dismissing the APC’s confidence. In a counter-statement, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP’s national publicity secretary, vowed that the APC’s time in power will come to an end by 2027. Ologunagba claimed that Nigerians are fed up with the ruling party’s governance, and the PDP is ready to lead the nation once again.
“The APC’s lifespan cannot extend beyond February 2027,” Ologunagba stated. “Nigerians will send APC to political oblivion where the ruling party truly belongs.”
As both parties gear up for what promises to be a fierce political battle in 2027, the stage is set for a contest that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape. Will Tinubu’s economic reforms secure his re-election, or will the PDP manage to regroup and reclaim power? Only time will tell.
