2025: The Year Nigerian Youth Must Take Charge of Their Nation's Future

As the new year unfolded, the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) issued a powerful call to action to the nation's youth. In his New Year’s message delivered in Abuja, NYCN President Sara-Igbe Sukubo emphasized that 2025 presents both a challenge and an opportunity—a chance for young Nigerians to step up and take a leading role in shaping their country’s future.

“This year, the NYCN urges the youth to embrace patriotism, unity, and active participation in governance,” Sukubo stated. He stressed that true patriotism is not just about supporting the nation in theory, but about practical support for the government at all levels—regardless of political affiliations.

Sukubo’s message went beyond traditional notions of patriotism. He urged the youth to take a proactive role in shaping national policy by contributing their ideas, innovation, and perspectives to the government’s decision-making process.

“The government plays a vital role in shaping policies that impact the lives of millions of Nigerians,” Sukubo said. “We need the youth to stand in solidarity with these efforts—not just by offering support, but by actively engaging in policy advocacy to ensure that our voices are heard and our concerns addressed.”

In a year filled with both challenges and opportunities, Sukubo called on young Nigerians to embrace active participation. Whether through voting, volunteering, or holding elected office, he insisted that young people must take responsibility for the direction of their country.

“2025 should be a year of opportunity, transformation, and active participation,” Sukubo urged. “This is the year for young Nigerians to come together, contribute to their communities, and pursue leadership roles in every sector.”

At the same time, Sukubo emphasized the importance of creating an environment that supports youth development. He advocated for greater investment in skill development programs, job creation, and entrepreneurship initiatives that would empower young Nigerians to thrive in a rapidly evolving global economy.

“The government must prioritize initiatives that provide practical training and equip young people with the tools to succeed,” he said. “Expanding educational programs, offering job training opportunities, and creating platforms to showcase youth innovation are critical to preparing young Nigerians for the future.”

Sukubo’s message to Nigerian youth was clear: the future of the nation rests in their hands. With determination, unity, and active participation, 2025 could be the year when young Nigerians rise to the challenge, making lasting contributions to the progress and prosperity of their country.

As the year unfolds, one thing is certain: Nigeria’s youth must not wait for change—they must be the change.
